Confessions to the Moon
LOGLINE:
A decade-spanning tale of a troubled yet affectionate single mother who must break the silence on the traumatic experiences that have been haunting her lineage when the same patterns begin taking over her and her daughters' life.
SYNOPSIS:
Confessions to the Moon is the story of Ana, a woman fighting against the traumatic patterns and violent experiences that have lived in her household for generations. Told through different time periods and using poetic narrative as a way to transmit a generational message, it narrates her life as a child, teenager, and as an adult. Exploring the many influential characters and the way they marked a lasting and grim imprint, Ana tries to put break the cycle of silence when her daughters grow up haunted by the same ancestral nightmares before the same self destructive behaviors repeat themselves all over again. Confessions to the Moon is an empowering story of love, forgiveness, and family.
Our goal is to honor those that shaped this film by telling the best story possible. It is also to honor the community of artists that are joining us on this journey. As co-founders of Matriarchy Films, we are committed to making films for and by Latinx, Black, Indigenous, and womxn of color. Most of the funding will be going to building a strong creative team, paying our cast and crew what they deserve, and covering the costs of getting it out into the world!
If we are able to make our stretch goal, take the film to the next level with premium equipment, add more BIPOC storytellers to our team, studio rentals, green screens, some CGI action, and a top notch editor to capture the mystical qualities of "Confessions." All the things! Oh and probably grab a little extra pan dulce for those late production sessions ;)
What does an artist do when they are inspired? CREATE without hesitation because there is a compelling force driving us to fill a void; within ourselves and the world. That force is what brought us together, three Latinx women inspired by one another's passion for unapologetic storytelling.
Matriarchy Films began in a single conversation after the final performance of a monologue performed by Lauren and written by Patricia, titled "Matriarchy." The gritty and courageously raw storytelling inspired Rosa Navarrete to dust off her camera and create a film version. And we did. It was guerilla style throughout the streets of Boyle Heights, Patricia's stomping grounds and home to our artistic oasis, CASA 0101 Theater. Since then we have produced two short films together, but continue to be active in several theater projects at CASA.
We are mothers, working class, immigrant, queer, and together we are fearless storytellers committed to Latinx and BIPOC storytelling. Patricia brings the fierce fire with mama bear vibes, Rosa is a gentle giant and intuitive genius, and Lauren is our muse and producing conductor.
It has taken each of us years to develop our voices as artists and mujeres, we are grateful for the journey and community of artists and mentors that bring us to this moment! It is only the beginning!
Dear contributor,
Every little bit counts and we want to thank each you for your believing in us! When you support this campaign, you are supporting our art, our mission, and the community of Latinx and BIPOC artists who will carry this film.
The deepest bonds we have created have been through storytelling in community. It is our hope that as a contributor you feel you are a part of this journey. Whether you donated because you know me or one of our team members personally or happen to catch a post and resonate with the story, you are essential to this work. It wouldn't be possible without you. We have a list of incentives for you so we can share our appreciation in fun and creative ways!
Please share this campaign and encourage others to join us in helping Confessions to the Moon come become a reality!
From each of us on the Matriarchy Films and "Confessions to the Moon" team, muchisimas gracias! Adelante!

Recent projects include being a writer/director on "The Train"- an independent series with showrunner Yelyna De Leon (LA Skins Festival 2021) and a co-creator on "A'we Deh Ya" a film by Paloma McGregor (Best Screendance Film Finalist, Denton Black Film Festival 2022), and "ELLAY" - an independent dark comedy series featuring an indigenous lead. Staying true to her roots in theater, Patricia is also writing a feature length play and is a dramaturg for Arena, A House Musical conceived by Abel Alvarado. Patricia believes in the transformative power of storytelling as medicine for Latinx artists and audiences alike.
Dearest Confessions Supporter,
We have a FINISHED FILM. I started the fundraising campaign over a year ago sitting in my grandmother's craft room editing the promo video knowing it would be a potent vessel. I stayed up all night, energized by the possibilities of getting the resources needed to get Confessions and Matriarchy's empowering message out into the world. It took time to make sure I got it right; that people knew what the campaign meant for Matriarchy's elevation as filmmakers and the healing we felt is the driving force behind this short film. I finished the video right before my 5am flight and since the campaign launched, we've been emboldened by the swell of supporters like you.
Sitting here now, I am truly proud to share that we have achieved something beautiful together, collectively cultivating a uniquely told familiar story of healing intergenerational trauma rooted in our experiences of colonization. It is an opportunity to release unspoken pain with a finale that Director Rosa Navarrete orchestrated to feel like a cathartic cry of our ancient mothers and inner child all at once. No big deal! lol <3
As always, THANK YOU. We wouldn't be here without you. The level of artistry that we were able to hire, in front of and behind the camera, will impress upon you the importance and power behind community, and the finished product was only possible from you believing in this story and us.
There have been a lot of lessons learned in this experience; priceless for guerrilla filmmakers who've never gone the "traditional route." Our next step is to plan some kind of private community screening to celebrate (L.A and Oʻahu)! We want to do it big! But with bicoastal living and the holidays approaching, it will take some time to figure out. We are also excited to submit to festivals! Sundance was our big submission goal and we made it. :D
We will keep you along for the journey of where Confessions goes and when the screening is; until then, feel free to reach out: confessionstothemoon.shortfilm@gmail.com
With love and gratitude,
Lauren, Patricia, and Rosa
Oye fam!
Here we are with another update up our sleeve! We have an edited version of our film!! Yes, OUR film. YOU helped bring this story to life, it is a testament of the love our friends, family, and colleagues have for each of us!
We are so proud of this film and what has been accomplished by all involved: crew, cast, family that lent us their spaces to film, items to build our sets and costumes- including original illustrations! Special shoutout to our partners and loved ones that helped with childcare while the parents in the cast and crew got to work! This is a true collective creation. It's a gorgeous film shining light on a tragically familiar story.
“Confessions” sets out to do exactly what the filmmakers intended: honor the pain and resilience of mothers and bring healing to our communities through the power of storytelling.
Looking forward to sharing the final version with you one day whether it be at a private screening, a festival, or in a homies backyard. Let's celebrate!
P.S We got fancy and have a production email: confessionstothemoon.shortfilm@gmail.com. Feel free to reach out!
Con amor,
Lauren, Patricia, Rosa
A little “that's a wrap” photo in the desert. We were a small but mighty team that day. The ancestors were with us. Look at those clouds :*)
From left to right:
Linda Lopez-Campo (Actor-Irene), Patricia Zamorano (Script Supervisor/Producer), Lauren Ballesteros (Actor, Exec. Producer/Writer), Alessandro Gentile (Director of Photography), Tim Karau (Gaffer/Alessandro's right hand), Marian Gutierrez (Actor-Catori). Beautifully centered is our brilliant director, Rosa Navarrete!
Hola Confessions Fam!
It has been a minute since we've shared our progress on Confessions to the Moon! We wrapped our production in the majestic sands and divine light of the Mojave Desert at the end of October y pues...the holidays hit hard lol
But we have been heavy in post production and now that we hit the tail end of it, we can come out of our cuevita (little cave) with some exciting news up our sleeves! Starting with a very special announcement for our cast….
Since the film is a magical realism story which dances between four generations of women, time zones, and spiritual realms, poetry weaves it all together via voice over of our Ancestral Spirit. We are so grateful to share that leading this journey is the one and only Chicanx/Latinx theater and film LEGEND Rose Portillo!
Though she is a giant in the Chicanx/Latinx theater world, Rose is one of the most generous, humble, and passionate storytellers out there. Some of her most recent credits include Encanto, Vida, and Zootopia+.
We got to know her through a production at Little Casa Theater in Boyle Heights back in 2019. When she said yes to this story in the early stages of the script, we couldn't help but feel everything was in alignment. It truly is nothing short of an honor to have her talent gracing this film. We can't wait for you to hear the gravity and depth she brings to Confessions to the Moon!
Thank you again for making this film a reality and we look forward to sharing more updates soon!
Con amor,
Lauren, Patricia, and Rosa

Hola Confessions to the Moon Family!
It has been an exciting few months since the campaign ended. Matriarchy Films has been working hard on pre-production, bringing together a wonderfully diverse, dedicated group of talented cast and crew! The process has not been easy as we have all truly grown from this experience producing a professional microbudget film. We are still guerilla filmmakers at heart and our grit makes magic happen on screen.
This weekend we are beginning principal photography! Rosa Navarrete, our extremely talented Director i.e sorceress of images and meaning alongside our detailed “visual psychiatrist” of a DP Alessandro Gentile, are going to blow our minds. I can't wait!
None of this would be possible without each of you believing in us, our message, and the transformative power of storytelling. This film will change lives. I feel it in my heart, pansa (belly), and the energy felt each time the artists, collaborators, and diligent producers come together.
Matriarchy Films is also grateful to our families, partners, and friends that have helped provide locations, items, and time to this film. Shoutout to Isaac and Liliana hanging together while their mamas work!
This film is a labor of love of from many hearts and hands! Check out just a few of our photos in pre-production below. More to come! Follow us on instagram: @confessionstothemoonfilm and @matriarchyfilms to follow along.
In gratitude and love,
Lauren, Patricia, and Rosa
Matriarchy Films
Hello Confessions Fam!
First and foremost, I am sending you my loving gratitude because since the campaign ended I have been doing production work everyday to bring this film to life thanks to you!! A major part of that has been the diligent work that Rosa and Patricia have done to make the script even better! Words cannot express my gratitude for this compassionate teamwork. My script is my second baby and they are great aunties/tias! lol
But I am so excited to share a wonderful update that we hired a bonafide professional and talented Director of Photography for the film-Alessandro Gentile!! He is the son of hard working immigrants from Argentina and Mexico, raised in the San Gabriel Valley (SGV) where he expanded his imagination for storytelling and honed his passionate for filmmaking at UC Santa Barbara and UCLA. Alessandro is an award-winning cinematographer working in Los Angeles who enjoys spending time with his family in Burbank on his off-days: hiking, playing tennis, surfing, skating and participating in an occasional game of soccer.
The Matriarchy team couldn't be more excited to add a powerhouse DP to our production team. He is another pillar to this work that will bring a diverse creative perspective to elevate the film. I can't wait to be on set and watch him and Rosa do their thing! You can check out his incredible work at https://www.gentileimages.com/featured-work.
*Side note: I love how he's not only an accomplished passionate artist and proud papa, but he is also SGV hometown homie- Temple City to be exact, right next to my hometown in El Monte! :D Urban “small town" kids with big dreams!

Thank you for being a part of our journey!
The Matriarchy team had a powerful launch to our campaign on Saturday! Family and community showed up big for the crowdfund of "Confessions to the Moon." It was an outpouring of genuine love, connection, and fond memories shared. It was incredible to share space with artists we have worked with over the years. Some who we've been in their plays, they have acted in our past films or let us film at their house! It demonstrated that art is about community, it is a reflection of our deepest desires to bring light and truth into our world.
This film is Lauren's second baby. Her daughter was at the launch too, what a cutie! But "Confessions" has probably been around longer since it's been in the works over six years. But now the film is "out" and people believe in the message. It feels incredible. ???
We have been hustling to prepare for this day, unsure of what lies ahead. But now we're speechless we raised over $3,500 on our first day! ???? It feels so good to be in this moment and we feel honored that so many people believe in us!! We can't wait to continue sharing our project!
